Johnny had a zest for life and was so full of joy. My first encounter with him was at a birthday party for his nephew-in-law. He took me under his wing and made me feel like we'd been lifelong friends. Full of joy, humor and laughter, he made an indelible impression. Hugs and kisses at parting were natural. But then, just a few days later, I received a card from Johnny thanking "me" for being at the party. I was speechless; words don't do his memory justice. Remarkable man with an open heart and a laugh that will be missed.

I was privileged to know John through reunions of the 534th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment in which my father also served during WWII. John was part of that "Greatest Generation" producing so many brave, committed, and unassuming men and women. His concern for others and his wonderful sense of humor are memorable. He was a great guy and will be missed. My sincere sympathy to his loving family.
