Allen Edward Schechter died September 24, 2022 at age 86 in the presence of his wife Esther.
Allen was born on December 17, 1935 at Mt. Sinai Hospital to Oscar and Sarah Schechter. He grew up on the west side of Chicago, attended Marshall High School and entered the University of Chicago at the age of 15 during the Hutchins era. He graduated from Northwestern University Law School and worked for Arthur Goldberg and as an editor at Commerce Clearing House (CCH) until he became Managing Editor. He retired from CCH in 1993.
Allen volunteered at the Museum of Science of Industry for 15 years, working with the baby chicks and cloned mice. He and his wife Esther lived in the Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood for 56 years with their two children. He was active in setting up the South Shore Commission and in the Jackson Park Highlands Association for many years. He loved walking in the Highlands, Jackson Park and to the 63rd Street Beach.
He is survived by his wife Esther, his sister, Marilyn Phillips, his children Deborah (Michael Hahn) and Daniel (Laura Castleman) and his grandchildren Matthew, Nicole, Nathan and Liliana.
