Vito J. Gargano passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Married to Theresa (nee Cacioppo) for 67 years, they had four children, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Gargano was president of the Italian American Federal Club, an organization comprising hundreds of federal employees of the United States Postal Service.

Gargano’s career spanned more than 40 years in the USPS. He started as a clerk/level 5 and rose to the highest level in the postal system, level 27, as district director of mail processing for Illinois. Along the way, he served as postmaster for Des Plaines, Illinois, and Racine, Wisconsin, as well as officer-in-charge at the post office in Glenview, Illinois.

Dedicated to his heritage and community, he had frequently participated in Columbus Day parades and other community events throughout his career and retirement.

An avid, lifelong gardener, Gargano enjoyed tending his backyard crop with the care of a botanist, growing a variety of vegetables, including acorn squash, zucchini and cocozzi (long squash). He was fond of his experience as eucharistic minister at Holy Family Chapel in Des Plaines.

You taught me the value of hard work and loving your family. I will miss our phone calls and just knowing you were there if I needed to talk or get advice. But I know you’re at peace and reunited with nana and Vince and great grandpa. So while I’ll miss your presence you’re always in my heart. Love you Papa

Dearest Dad - I miss you so! You would be thrilled to know that the watermelon seeds we planted have sprouted a baby watermelon! All the neighbors miss your smile and of course your generosity in giving them vegetables. Everyone remembers you with genuine love and affection.

Vito was a one of a kind man. Once you earned his trust, and that took time, his affection and generosity were boundless. His caring nature was evident to all that came into contact with him. We shared stories, desires and dreams. We worked together to solve problems and tackle issues that were important to both of us. Most of all, he was, and is, my buddy. I made him several promises that I will keep. He showered me with affection and understanding. I miss him and will always. I know that he is there, guiding and challenging me. The garden will continue. I love you Vito. Thanks for everything.
