Edwin E. Sis

Date of Death:
Saturday, December 19, 2020

Son of Efrain Sis and Alicia Barrera, Edwin Efrain Sis was born on September 5, 1959 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Among close family members and friends, Edwin was often referred to as “William,” which was created by his late brother, Byron Renee Sis. As a teenager, he was known by many to be funny and rebellious. Many of his family members and friends growing up can recall many stories that reference his comedic spirit and pranks that he would do to those around him. At 19 years old, he made the lifechanging decision to leave his first home to begin a new life in the United States.

Edwin arrived to Chicago on February 2, 1978 with thin shoes and attire that were not enough to withstand the brutally cold winter weather. Upon his arrival, he lived with his aunt, Floridalma Garcia, and over time he fostered relationships that served as his social and support network. He held a number of jobs before working for Walgreens in 1980, where he worked for over 40 years. It was here where he met his wife and the love of his life, Yvonne Marie Martinez.

Yvonne vividly remembers her first date with Edwin. He took her to see Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, followed by dinner at a nearby McDonald’s. Her conversations with Edwin were what kept her engaged and interested in dating him. They started dating shortly after and on September 11, 1981, the young couple got married. Two years later, they had their first child, Margaret Alicia Sis. After years of renting and living in apartments, Edwin and Yvonne purchased their first home in June 1990. Two years later, they had their second child, Anthony Edwin Sis.

Edwin was a loving, caring, and giving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and two dogs, Chiko and Bella, who he lovingly referred to as his children. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him, whether they were a customer, family member, coworker, or friend. He was a lover of sports including American football and fútbol. Edwin loved traveling and enjoyed many trips with Yvonne. He also took much pride in the personal success and accomplishments of his two children. Although he lived in Chicago for most of his life, he always had a desire to return to his home country of Guatemala.

Edwin leaves behind an unforgettable legacy in the lives of many people. He will undoubtedly be remembered for his incredible generosity, funny personality, and award-winning smile.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Yvonne Marie Sis, and two children, Margaret Alicia Sis and Anthony Edwin Sis. He is also survived by his sister, Aiza Violeta Sis de Sarti, his brother-in-law, Cesar Augusto Sarti, and seven nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by Efrain Sis, Alicia Barrera de Sis, and Byron Renee Sis.
